Youth With a Mission Canberra has a staff and student contingency from all over the world. Whilst English is our main language. At any given time any number of languages can be heard on our campus.
Our facility caters for people of all ages. We take a great deal of pleasure in having all generations represented in our community.
It goes without saying that we seek to provide equal opportunities for men and women. Gods kingdom is not discriminatory.
YWAM Canberra is people.
Youth With a Mission Canberra is part of the greater family of ministries called YWAM (why-wham).
We are a diverse, global, Christian youth-focused movement from many nations, backgrounds, ages and cultures; sharing our faith through meeting practical, spiritual and physical needs, offering training in more than 800 courses and seminars for service in all spheres of society.
YWAM is a not-for-profit charitable volunteer organisation that currently operates in over 1,000 locations and 150+ countries, with over 18,000 staff.
The Rediger family pioneered HYMN HOUSE (His Youth of Many Nations). For over a decade this ministry operated primarily as an outreach to the local Canberra community.
Tom and Diana Hallas led the first Australian Discipleship Training School in an old guest house in a southern Canberra suburb, and another one later that year.
Soon after, the Canberra base relocated to Goulburn for four years where the Hallas’ continued to lead Crossroads DTS and Schools of Evangelism (SOE).
Tom and Diana returned to Canberra, after the current facility, then a monastery of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, was purchased from the Catholic Church. The mandate of the Sacred Heart ministry had been missions, youth and training! And so the legacy continued.
New ministries were birthed – counselling and the IBC school (Introduction to Biblical Counselling), Lighthouse Ministries (an outreach to university students), and Kings Kids Australia.
The Watson site was further developed as an extension campus of YWAM’s global university, the University of the Nations (U of N) and in 1999 became an operating location of the ‘Institute for the Nations – Australia‘ (I for N) which is the Australian government accredited training arm of Youth With a Mission. The name was changed from Institute for the Nations to “YWAM Training” in 2016.
Training currently offered at the Canberra centre (much of it government accredited) includes Discipleship Training School (DTS), Staff internships, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) as well as a number of shorter seminars.
Other local and international ministries are located here as well.
